A school is shut today as a mark of respect for a "cherished" teacher. Cardiff's Whitchurch Primary will be shut for the funeral of Nikki Jones, who tragically passed away after an illness.

Ann Grifffin, headteacher of the 687-pupil school said Mrs Jones had shaped "countless young leaves" during her career. The teacher was "loved and respected by all who knew her."

In a moving tribute from the whole school, headteacher Ann Griffin said: “Nikki was a cherished member of our school community for many years. Her dedication to teaching, her unwavering commitment to her pupils, and her gentle, compassionate spirit left an indelible mark on all of us.

"She was more than just a teacher – she was a mentor, a role model, and a guiding light to so many. Her classroom was a place where children felt safe, inspired, and encouraged to be their best.

“Over the years, Nikki shaped countless young lives, always bringing warmth, humour, and kindness into everything she did. Her legacy is one of love, learning, and quiet strength.

"Even through her illness, she showed immense courage and grace, continuing to care for others while facing her own challenges. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family at this difficult time.

"We hope they find some comfort in knowing how loved and respected Nikki was by all who knew her. Her absence will be profoundly felt, but her spirit will remain a part of our school forever.”

One parent whose children were taught by Mrs Jones at the school has fond memories of a "fantastic teacher". She said: "My youngest son was taught by Mrs Jones in year five. She was such an engaging teacher who had so much time and patience with all the children, and the parents, and was such an integral member of the school community. We were devastated to hear the sad news."
