A primary school could be replaced by an "impressive" site with capacity for more pupils. Caerphilly council's plans would see a new-look Plasyfelin Primary School built in place of the existing facilities in Caenant Road.

If the proposal goes ahead the new school would welcome 420 pupils and 60 nursery learners. According to council papers this would amount to 26 more pupils than the current capacity allows. The council says a phased construction period would allow the school to stay open with children learning in temporary classrooms.

Deputy leader, councillor Jamie Pritchard, said he had supported the project “for some significant time”, adding: “The facility will enhance the educational opportunities for pupils and open the facility up for wider use." It comes after a pre-application consultation report showed some concerns in the community over the impact on the surrounding area, including transport arrangements and the new school’s size.

Planning agents The Urbanists argued a drop-off and pick-up point on Lewis Drive would be a “positive introduction” to the road network and that the school would encourage pupils to walk, cycle or use public transport where possible. Screening would be installed to protect nearby homes from noise, according to the papers.

Councillor Shayne Cook, who is vice-chair of governors at Plasyfelin Primary, said: “I’m very happy to see plans for such an impressive new modern school move to the next stage. Importantly the school's vast playing fields and surrounding habitat will be secured for future generations of children to enjoy.”

Mr Pritchard welcomed the findings of the “useful” pre-application consultation and said he was “satisfied that there has been a good attempt to make sure resident opinion has been taken on board”. He added: “There is wide support for the new school in the community.” The application for planning permission is currently out for consultation and can be viewed on the council website under reference 25/0168/LA.
