Plans are underway for a "long overdue" new primary school which is expected to cost £19.3million. Powys Council wants the Welsh Government to provide almost two thirds of the funding for the school in Brecon. The new site would be occupied by English-language school Ysgol Golwg Pen Y Fan, which opened last September and currently operates across three sites. This follows the merger of Mount Street Infants School, Mount Street Junior School and Cradoc primary school.

The 360-place school development is planned to be built at the former Brecon High School site. A funding bid has been prepared by council officers who propose that the Welsh Government provides 65% of the funding, which would come to around £12.54m. The council would need to find the remaining £6.75m, which would be borrowed.

The council's head of transforming education, Marianne Evans, said: "The school is operating across three sites, and it is a challenging situation for them to be in. Hopefully this starts the project on its journey.” Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here.

Speaking at a scrutiny committee meeting, the Conservative group leader, councillor Aled Davies, said he welcomed the bid as the school buildings had "seen better days". He added: "I also welcome the fact that pupils will have early years and wrap-around provision with multi-agency facilities and it’s great to see that.”

Councillor Gareth E Jones, of Powys Independents, described the progress as "long overdue" and the current buildings as "well past their sell-by date in a lot of ways". Recommendations from the committee will be added to the report, which is expected to be discussed by the Liberal Democrat and Labour cabinet at a meeting next Tuesday. If everything goes as planned the new school could open by September 2027.
