A school went into lockdown after threats to a pupil. Police are now investigating the incident at Y Pant School in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

No threats were made on site, no weapons were on site and no-one was hurt, the local education authority said. The incident on Wednesday is believed to have been sparked by an argument between two young people.

The threats were said to have been made via social media, or verbally via a third person. Police are investigating.

A spokesperson for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council spokesman said the incident happened on Wednesday, June 5: “A threat was made towards a learner, from someone not on school grounds, which was reported to school staff. Lockdown measures were implemented immediately.

"South Wales Police arrived swiftly and confirmed the site as safe. School staff acted swiftly, following the appropriate procedures to assure the safety of learners, with minimal disruption to the school day. The ongoing investigation into matter is now being taken forward by South Wales Police and we cannot make further comment.”

The high performing school in Pontyclun has more than 1,000 pupils aged 11 to 18. It serves the areas of Pontyclun, Talbot Green, Dolau, Brynna and Llanharry.

When it was last inspected in 2017 Y Pant received the best possible excellent rating for all five areas looked at under Estyn’s former inspection process. South Wales Police was approached for comment.
